I learned land navigation when I was in the Marine Corps and then spent years teaching land nav to our SWAT team. As a trainer I always thoroughly research what skill I am teaching. Over the years I have collected almost every book on land nav this book makes this skill super simple to learn a lot of books end up confusing the reader.besides going into how to read a map and what all is in the map index. This book breaks map and compass navigation down to 4 skills you need to concentrate on. They are taking and following a field bearing to measuring and plotting bearings on a map. Once you have these skills down the only way to get better at land nav is to spend a lot of dirt time practicing these skills.

I thought I knew how to use a compass until I read this book. What I learned is that it is a powerful tool capable of a great deal more than just pointing north. Based on instruction found here, I bought a high quality compass and topographical maps for an upcoming trip. No, I don't consider myself an expert now, but I am going to put some of these newfound skills to the test. There are chapters on using a GPS and the UTM systems, but I want to work with the basics first. If your goal is to master the basics, this book is a great place to start.

This is a great start to navigation basics. There are, however, some mistakes in the book. So far:*page 67: The bearings plotted on the Fig 28 map are incorrect.*page 109: states that you can find the slope (grade) by taking the vertical distance (elev gain), divide it by the horizontal distance and multiplying it by 100%. Why would anyone waste their time multiplying a number by 100%??? 100% equals 1. 1 multiplied by any said number is the said number. It SHOULD say to multiply by 100 to get the SLOPE %. This incorrect "formula" continues throughout the section on slope/grade.

I teach Map and Compass to approximate 100 plus students for the San Diego Sierra Club, North County Chapter. It is through a class we teach called the "Wilderness Basics Course". It's the only reference I now use and recommend to my students. The author's ability to take a very complicated subject and make it easier for individuals to understand is excellent!

Love this book!! It is extremely helpful to anyone who is preparing for a trip with the great outdoors and/or just wants to get comfortable in case there really is an apocalypse. I love the charts, bullet lists and formatting of the book! It made it really easy to read and follow.

Have looked through the book and I love it. It has been years since I was a Scout and Eagle Scout where I did a lot of orienting and such, so I needed a review and this book is great....Bought a new Suunto Compass to go along with this. May never need it since I do more extensive day hiking and not as much multi day backpacking, but it is good to know to teach others and guess what, in the wilderness, you just never know.

I have read Be Expert with Map and Compass (over a decade ago) and this book. I found this book went into a lot of information about map types, how to use a compass for various purposes, and how to use a compass in case you are lost. Lots of tips for getting around in the wilderness with a map as well as what to do when lost. I think it was worth the money spent. Be Expert with Map and compass seemed to have more on orienteering competition concepts, such as how to determine the best route in order to hit control points in an orienteering competition. But I do have a few concerns. One, the author doesn't recommend any compasses that don't have a declination adjustment. I went out and bought one that has such an adjustment as a result. But then, upon doing more research, learned that for orienteering competition organizers normally provide a map that has MAGNETIC north lines drawn on it -- not the True North lines with recommended declination adjustment at the bottom. If the author has spelled out that compasses without a declination adjustment feature are just fine for orienteering competitions, I would not have purchased the fancy compass with a declination screw and sighting mirror. Two, there is a table that compares features of various name brand compasses, which was really helpful, but I think it could be expanded to indicate whether the compass has a declination screw or other means of adjusting declination. I had to spend a lot of time online figuring this out from often poorly worded product descriptions that didn't indicate if these feature actually existed on the compasses. It was only when I saw the declination screw driver on some models that I actually had confidence the product had that adjustment capability.Three -- I had to really look at a few diagrams to understand the point. For example, there is one compass diagram that shows how a declination adjustment has been made. With how many arrows there are (orienting arrow, magnetic arrow, baseplate arrow) and the various ways you can read a bearing on a compass, some leader lines indicating where to look would have been helpful. He goes into altimeters and GPS, which was good, although I didn't read that part since I'm not interested in it right now.But I still am glad I have the book, and will be referring to it as my knowledge of orienteering grows. Already I needed to consult it about what township lines are, and where to get maps.

Outstanding book for newbies to learn and practice compass and navigation skills, and a fantastic review for those who have had some experience already. Logically laid out, well-written and mostly easy to understand. The difficult parts are only difficult because of such foreign and new concepts to this reader! But with continued focus and study, I was able to understand every bit of it ultimately! Grateful for the pratice sections at the back of the book. Also appreciate the repetition of the most important and fundamental points that must be understood and practiced in order to have success out in the real world! Finally, really appreciate having specific reviews and guides for equipment. That actually helped me know the compass I had was not very good, and helped me to select the perfect compass!
